Evolution of Windows OS

 Windows is a graphical operating system developed by Microsoft. It allows users to view and store files, run the software, play games, watch videos, and provides a way to connect to the internet. It was released for both home computing and professional works. "NT" was formerly expanded to "New Technology" 

Windows 1.0 (1985)

In 1985, Microsoft released Windows 1.0, the first version of its GUI-based operating system.

Windows 2.0 (1987)

Windows 2.0 is the successor to Windows 1.0, a 16-bit Microsoft Windows GUI-based operating environment that was introduced on December 9, 1987.

Windows 3.0 (1990)

Windows 3.0 is the third major release of Microsoft Windows, launched in 1990. Like its predecessors, it is not an operating system, but rather a graphical operating environment that runs on top of DOS.

Windows 3.1 (1992)

Windows 3.1 is a series of 16-bit operating environments produced by Microsoft for use on personal computers, released on April 6, 1992. The series began with Windows 3.1, which was first sold during April 1992 as a successor to Windows 3.0.

Windows NT 3.1 (1993)

Windows NT 3.1 is a major release of the Windows NT operating system developed by Microsoft and oriented towards businesses. It is the first release of Windows NT and was released on July 27, 1993.

Windows NT 3.51 (1995)

Windows NT 3.51 is a major release of the Windows NT operating system developed by Microsoft and oriented towards businesses.

Windows 95 (1995)

Windows 95 is a consumer-oriented operating system developed by Microsoft as part of its Windows 9x family of operating systems. The first operating system in the 9x family, it is the successor to Windows 3.1x, and was released to manufacturing on August 15, 1995, and generally to retail on August 24, 1995. 

Windows NT 4.0 (1996)

Windows NT 4.0 is a major release of the Windows NT operating system developed by Microsoft and oriented towards businesses. It was released to manufacturing on July 31, 1996, and was launched to retail on August 24, 1996, exactly one year after the release of its MS-DOS equivalent, Windows 95.

Windows 98 (1998)

Windows 98 is an operating system developed by Microsoft as part of its Windows 9x family of Microsoft Windows operating systems. It is the successor to Windows 95, and was released to manufacturing on May 15, 1998, and generally to retail on June 25, 1998

Windows 2000 (2000)

Windows 2000 is a major release of the Windows NT operating system developed by Microsoft and oriented towards businesses. It was released to manufacturing on December 15, 1999 and was officially released to retail on February 17, 2000.

Windows Mobile (2000)

Windows Mobile is a discontinued family of mobile operating systems developed by Microsoft for smartphones and personal digital assistants. Its origin dated back to Windows CE in 1996, though Windows Mobile itself first appeared in 2000 as Pocket PC 2000 which ran on Pocket PC PDAs.

Windows ME (2000)

Windows Millennium Edition, or Windows Me, is an operating system produced by Microsoft as part of the Windows 9x family of Microsoft Windows operating systems. It was the direct successor to Windows 98, and was released to manufacturing on June 19, 2000, with retail sales beginning on September 14, 2000.

Windows XP (2001)

Windows XP is a major release of the Windows NT operating system developed by Microsoft. It was the direct successor to both Windows 2000 for professional users and Windows Me for home users, and it was released to manufacturing on August 24, 2001, with retail sales beginning on October 25, 2001.

Windows Server (2003)

Windows Server 2003 is the second version of Windows Server operating system produced by Microsoft. It is also part of the Windows NT family of operating systems and was released on April 24, 2003.

Windows CE (2006)

Windows Embedded CE 6.0 is the sixth major release of the Microsoft Windows embedded operating system targeted to enterprise-specific tools such as industrial controllers and consumer electronics devices like digital cameras and was released on June 13, 2013.

Windows Vista (2007)

Windows Vista is a major release of the Windows NT operating system developed by Microsoft. It was the direct successor to Windows XP, released five years prior, which at the time was the longest time span between successive releases of Microsoft Windows desktop operating systems. It was released on January 30, 2007

Windows Home Server (2007)

Windows Home Server is a home server operating system from Microsoft. It was announced on 7 January 2007 at the Consumer Electronics Show by Bill Gates, released to manufacturing on 16 July 2007 and officially released on 4 November 2007.

Windows 7 (2009)

Windows 7 is a major release of the Windows NT operating system developed by Microsoft. It was released to manufacturing on July 22, 2009, and became generally available on October 22, 2009. It is the successor to Windows Vista

Windows Phone (WP) (2010)

Windows Phone (WP) is a discontinued family of mobile operating systems developed by Microsoft for smartphones as the replacement successor to Windows Mobile and Zune. Windows Phone featured a new user interface derived from the Metro design language. It was first launched in October 2010 with Windows Phone 7.

Windows 8 (2012)

Windows 8 is a major release of the Windows NT operating system developed by Microsoft. The product was released to manufacturing on August 1, 2012, and generally to retail on October 26, 2012.

Windows 8.1 (2013)

Windows 8.1 is a major release of the Windows NT operating system developed by Microsoft. It was released to manufacturing on August 27, 2013, and broadly released for retail sale on October 17, 2013.

Windows 10 (2015)

Windows 10 is a major release of the Windows NT operating system developed by Microsoft. It is the successor to Windows 8.1, released nearly two years earlier, and was released to manufacturing on July 15, 2015, and broadly released for the general public on July 29, 2015.

Windows 11 (2021)

Windows 11 is an upcoming major version of the Windows NT operating system developed by Microsoft. Announced on June 24, 2021, with an expected release in late 2021, Windows 11 is the successor to Windows 10, released in 2015.
