History of poisonous Apple

 From poison to nutrition

The unbelievable history of tomato 🍅

Over 200 years, Europeans are terrified of a berry we consume habitually. Over 38.3 million metric tons of berries are consumed globally in the year 2020. There is a scientific reason behind the existed.

In olden days only aristocrats could afford to buy tomatoes. Because of the demand prevailed in the era. The Aristocrats who consumed tomatoes got sick and many rested in graves. Hence Tomatoes has been nicknamed "POISON APPLE". The truth is wealthy European people use pewter plates (high in lead content) to serve food. Due to its high acidity when placed in that flatware, the fruit would leech lead and results lead poisoning which causes death. During those days they never thought of the connection between the plate and poison, so the fruit was considered as poisonous.

On the other side poor people who used wooden plates are not affected and didn't have an aversion about the tomatoes. Therefore tomatoes had a wide usage among the poor people.

The tomatoes didn't get blamed just for what was really lead poisoning. Before the fruit made it's way to the table in North America, as it  was classified as a  deadly night shade, a poisonous family of Solanaceae plant that contains toxins called tropane alkaloids.

As per the history tomato is considered as an ornamental plant rather than food  .Robert Gibbon Johnson ( colonel John) proved that tomatoes aren't poisonous by eating basket of tomatoes and being healthy.

Later the use of tomatoes all over the countries in pizza ,sauce and many other food items changed the bad impression of the people .

Today countries across the world use tomatoes as a king ingredient in all the dishes but it wasn't the case all the time. It is also known as "POOR  MAN'S APPLE" because of it's nutritious content and chief vegetable crop in India.
