A registration number is assigned to all motorized road vehicles in India.
The
District-level Regional Transport Office (RTO) of various states issues the
Vehicle Registration Plate number (commonly known as number plate).
Design and structure
Types of Number Plates in India:
1. White number plate with black lettering
private vehicles
Vehicles with this number plate are not permitted to be used for commercial activities, such as transporting products or carrying passengers.
2.Yellow number plate with black lettering
These are commercial vehicles like taxi, cabs, trucks.
Commercial vehicle drivers with yellow plates must also need a driving license.3.Black number plate with yellow

Rental vehicles
These kinds of number plates are also common in luxury hotel transportation. These vehicles can operate as commercial vehicles without the need for the driver to have a driving license.
4.Green number plate with white lettering
This registration number is exclusively available for electric vehicles.
5.Blue number plate with white lettering
Vehicles registered to an embassy or United Nations have white lettering on a light blue background
6.Red number plate with Emblem
This is only used for president of India and governor of states
7.Number plate with an upward-pointing arrow
Army and Military vehicles
The plate numbering is started from an arrow pointing upward called Broad Arrow.
The two numbers followed by Broad Arrow are the date of manufacturing.
The next alphabet indicates the class of the vehicle which generally tells about the type of vehicle.
Next is the actual serial number of the vehicle.
The last alphabet is the check code.
